Mallorca, in addition to being recognized for its lush coves and its historic center, also stands out as a territory for the conservation of flora and fauna. Through an extensive network of parks and nature reserves, the largest of the Balearic Islands, it enjoys great prestige as a refuge for life and a temple for nature. Here you have a list of some of them.

Natural Park of s’Albufera

The Natural Park of s’Albufera de Mallorca is not only the largest wetland region of the Balearic Islands, but also one of the most important, and as proof of this, it was declared a Natural Park in 1988, a Wetland of International Importance and Special Protection Area for Birds by the Natura 2000 network. Additionally, the park is considered a Site of Community Importance.

With so many recognitions, it is not difficult to imagine that the almost 1,700 hectares of extension that the park comprises are a must for any visitor. Located in the municipalities of Muro and Sa Pobla, the region is separated from the sea by a system of dunes with more than 10,000 years old, although if it is old, we must say that a large part of the wetland originated some 100,000 years ago. years ago.

Natural Reserve of s’Albufereta

As part of the natural treasures of Mallorca, we must turn our attention to the bay of Pollensa, where the Natural Reserve of s’Albufereta is located, since along its 211 hectares (plus another 290 that surround it), this region represents a valuable refuge for numerous species of plants and animals. The Natura 2000 Network has included it in its select list, ensuring the conservation of its natural elements.

In addition, the s’Albufereta coastal wetland has been named a Special Nature Reserve since 2005, although much earlier, in 1991, its ecological importance had already been recognized as a Natural Area of Special Interest through the law of Natural Spaces and Urban Planning of the Areas of Special Protection of the Balearic Islands.

Natural Park of s’Albufera des Grau

It is a protected natural area that includes, in addition to the Albufera des Grau, the island of Colom and the Cape Favàrtix. With an extension extended recently in the year 2003 of more than 5,000 hectares, the park encompasses a wide variety of natural settings such as forests, farming regions and for livestock, beach, cliffs, islets and wetlands.

Much of the area is included in the Natura 2000 Network and has been designated as a Natural Area of Special Interest for the natural values it contains and its interest for the conservation of the Biosphere. Currently, five natural reserves are recognized within the park: Bassa de Morella, es Prat, s’Estany, illa d’En Colom and the Addaia islands.

Natural Park of Sa Dragonera

Declared a Special Protection Area for Birds and a Site of Community Importance, the Sa Dragonera Natural Park, also included in the Natura 2000 Network, consists of some 274 hectares of land, plus a maritime region that totalizes together some 908 hectares of land of great importance.

Constituted by the islets of Es Pantaleu and La Mitjana, in addition to the island of Sa Dragonera, this natural park is separated from Mallorca by a channel of 800 meters wide, composed of sandy bottoms that allow the life of numerous marine species, which has led to consider the area as an Area of Marine Influence.

After an attempt to urbanize the island in the last century, the space was constituted as a Natural Park in 1995, as a result of its purchase by the Consell de Mallorca in 1987, being also declared a Natural Area of Special Interest in the same year.

Natural Place of the Serra de Tramuntana

From the north of Mallorca, a mountainous distribution rises along 90 kilometers. The Serra de Tramuntana (which takes its name from the cold wind from the north known as tramontana), is one of the most representative places of the Balearic Islands, and is constituted by a series of peaks, many of them capable of exceeding the one thousand meters high

The calcareous material predominates in these mountainous formations, which, in turn, and twinned with the sea, give rise to numerous and very peculiar karstic formations. In total, the Serra de Tramuntana covers some 62,403 hectares of land along some 1,123 hectares of sea. For this reason, it is the largest protected area of the Balearic Islands, recognized as a Natural Area since 2007 and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2011.

Natural Park of the Llevant

The Natural Park of the peninsula of Llevant encompasses an extensive network of mountains in the municipality of Artà, among which are the highest peaks of the Serres de Llevant as Puig de sa Tudossa (441 m), Puig des Porrassar (491 m) and Puig Morey (564 m).

The mountainous area covers an area of 1,671 hectares, where there are also areas of coastal cliffs and an important collection of plants such as holm oaks, palm hearts and reeds.

At the same time, the Llevant peninsula park provides refuge to several populations of Mediterranean tortoise and numerous birds such as hawks, hawks, eagles and seagulls. This fact has also led to the area being considered a Special Protection Area for Birds and a Site of Community Interest.
