In the present is home to over 350 different plant species and numerous native animals endemic to the Balearics. Accessible by 20 minute on a boat that leaves from Santa Ponsa or ferry journey from the coastal town of Sant Elm (during the peak season the ferries run regularly) is sailing along the coastline to a perfect spot for swimming and snorkelling followed by a full lunch and plenty of delicious sangria. Sa Dragonera is separated from the main island by a small channel. Six kilometres long and crowned by an ancient watchtower, Sa Dragonera Natural Park takes its name from its shape, said to resemble a dragon and is made up of three islets : Illot des Pantaleu, Sa Mitjana and Sa Dragonera. The park’s fauna is another of its most interesting aspects and the seabirds, birds of prey and migratory ones are the most characteristic wildlife on the spot.
The auchtocthonous mammals are represented by four different species of bats and the “mular” dolphin, a 2-3 metres long species that usually approaches the coast. Particularly worthy of note is the wall lizard population. An endemic subspecies that cannot be found anywhere else in the world, as well as the particular snail species which is also endemic to the Balearic Islands. Sa Dragonera is not to be missed because it’s an absolute gem. I had an amazing day here! I’ve never experienced something like that. The major attraction is the hundreds of lizards on the island and the crystal clear waters in the bays. Lots of tiny lizards was running from under my feet with every step I took 🙂 So much fun! With its beautiful views and a bit of a Jurassic Park atmosphere, the whole island is an amazing experience. I’ve booked my next holiday in Mallorca already and definitely I will go back to see some more of the little dragons! Therefore, if you’re starting your trip from Palma I would recommend an earliest bus to Port d’Andratx, breakfast there in Cappuccino Grand Cafe, a walk along the water and then a short bus journey to St Elm. Make yourself a lovely day trip full of adventures!
