While you’re in Mallorca embark on an exciting adventure where you can admire some of the most impressive views of the east coast of the island. There are numerous coves and sea caves on this exciting journey where you can see a wide range of marine life or dive among the most stunning rocky caves. If you are looking to get off the tourist path and you are ready to discover what lies beneath, there are a number of spots to enjoy especially along the north coast. One of the smallest formation of caves on the island, ‘Coves del Drach’ (Dragon Caves) is a unique place that was discovered in 1896 and nowadays, is beautifully lit (an electrical lighting system was installed, beautifully displaying the many stalactites and stalagmites) with well laid out pathways that lead visitors down to one of the world’s largest underground lakes – Lake Martel – which you can take a boat trip across.

This complex tunnel system of caves is one of the most dramatic in Mallorca and is spread over an impressive distance of 2000 metres. If you want to live this amazing experience and find out more during a guided tour, you can enjoy a light show set to classical music to marvel at the beauty of these caves whilst learning about the history of the area and about the discoverer of the caves. Dubbed the “dragon’s caves”, these limestone caves date back to the middle ages and are a sight that has to be seen to be believed. Being located in Porto Cristo, Cuevas del Drach feature hundreds of dramatic stalactites that are lit up in a spectacular manner.

On the one-hour guided tour you can learn about the formation of the caves as well as the limestone within before finishing in Lake Martel, the largest underground lake in Europe. Also, travelling further north to the town of Artà you can dinscover another special location named the ‘Coves d’ Artà’.

Positioned some 46m above sea level visitors are led from one cave to another where every one of them has been given a different name until they reach the deepest one known as ‘inferno’ (hell). As you emerge from the cave there is a stunning view out to sea which is framed by the cragged rock walls. The special lighting has been installed in this particular labyrinth to create a magical atmosphere.

This is one of the caves which has had a substantial significance historically; it has been used for centuries by smugglers and pirates – famously Jaume I found over 2000 Arabs hiding there with all their cattle during the Christian Conquest! Therefore, if you are considering a trip to Mallorca make sure you take some time to go and visit one of these caves – the underground lakes and stunning rock formations are definitely made for a unique experience!
