It’s always a good idea to hike up into the mountains to see the amazing views of the island down below, especially during this season. 😀 But there are so many different hikes in Mallorca, that it can be hard to know which one to choose. 🙂 So, let’s start our journey with a great option, not far away from the centre, in an old but amazing town named Alaro. There you’ll find Castell d’ Alaro – a beautiful castle perched on top of a mountain, from where you will get a great landscape of the Tramuntana mountains and the city of Palma de Mallorca.

To get there, it takes around two hours to do the whole hike, so a total of around 4 hours but you should include some resting time to enjoy the views at the top! 😀 Reaching the top of this peak is a epic challenge combined with a bit of history and quite possibly, if you are lucky, with the best lunch you will ever going to taste. When it comes to its history, the castle is from Moorish times and has seen some important historical events including the resistance of King Jaumes II knights, Cabrit and Bassa (popular legend considers them martyrs) against the troops of King Alfonso III of Aragón.

Therefore, if you have decided and you want to give a try to this place, then let me give you a tip. You can begin the hike from Alaro from the road marked PM120 leading to Orient where you’ll find the road leading up to the castle on the left, with its corresponding sign. The road crosses Son Penyaflor before reaching Es Pouet and this is where the climb starts to get a bit steeper and stonier as you go up to the ancient castle.

But believe me, it’s worth it! 🙂 At the top is also a refuge where you can spend the night or just enjoy some lunch, a coffee or a cake. Also, if you don’t want to walk from the very bottom, you can drive up the winding lane which leads to the restaurant ES Verger (the place I mentioned above). From here, is about a 40 minute hike to the castle and you can enjoy your lunch in the restaurant on your way back down. But make sure you get there early otherwise will be many cars coming down the other way and you might get stuck! Enjoy your trip!
