A very popular place in Mallorca

Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, lying in the Mediterranean Sea and is a popular holiday destination with famous resorts, mostly on the busy south side including Playa de Mallorca, Santa Ponsa and El Arenal which are close to its capital – Palma de Mallorca. Here you can still find authentic fishing villages with charming restaurants, rugged nature and beautiful bays of golden sand beaches like Pollensa, Alcudia and Cala d’Or. This part of Mallorca makes the area ideal for families with children and also for those who want to see how heaven looks like on earth. Because of the mild climate, the island nowadays is getting more and more popular for people who like to hibernate in southern Europe. Talking about the southern part of the isle, in the south-east corner is a magical place full of wonderful things were you can get in 20 minutes  by car from its nearby locations as Cala d’Or or Porto Colom. Felanitx is a small town and it lies inland from it’s closest sea port of Porto Colom being the administrative centre for the area. The municipality of Felanitx was once an area of high strategic importance as its terrain offered an excellent viewpoint over the eastern seaways.

The Santueri Castle, which lies seven kilometres from Felanitx on a high plateau that rises to 475m, was deliberately constructed on a high rock with difficult access. It was probably originally built by the Moors but was taken over by Jaume I in 1231 during his conquest on the island. The castle was then granted to the Count of Roselló Nunyo Sanç, although on his death it was returned to the crown. The coastal area is renowned for its gorges and secluded bays, the biggest of it being the Port de Felanitx as the largest bay in the east of the island. Inside the country, is the little Sierra de Llevant mountain range – these small mountains are separated by extensive valleys with thick wooded cliffs towering above them.

Therefore, the landscape flattens out while is joining to the Mallorcan plain, the land being fertile is farmed extensively producing apricots, oranges, almonds, and grapes for wine. Talking about that , another main attraction in the area are the vineyards. Many are open to the public but book in advance if you would like a tasting or a tour. The town is also known for its capers, or ‘green pearls’. You can buy them at the Sunday morning market ( Felanitx holds a weekly market on every Sunday mornings), which spills out onto the streets around the church of Sant Miquel with local pottery displayed on the church steps.

There is also a covered market named Sa Placa where food and flowers are sold and is open Tuesday to Sunday throughout the year. At the market in Felanitx are exhibitors displaying many kinds of fruit & veg, meat, fish, flowers and as well as local craft goods. Once down in the main town square, there are plenty of outdoor cafes where a refreshment may be taken or you just want to relax a little. As one approaches the main square, the haunting ‘pan’ pipe music will be heard performed by a group of musicians who both play the music and offer CD’s for sale featuring their repertoire – you can even buy your own pan pipes from them.

There is nothing better on a warm summer morning than relaxing in the square with a coffee and listening to the music. This is a place to enjoy authentic Mallorca. When it comes to food and adventure, hiking and biking is a great way to take into consideration. There are a number of routes which allows both gentle and relaxing, challenging walks and rides. If you don’t like the heights, the nearest beach is at Porto Colom and the surrounding coastline. This charming area that offer quiet and comfortable accommodation is for those who are looking for a peaceful vacation.
