It’s time to talk about one of the villages that best describe my beautiful vacation in Mallorca and that has to be Puigpunyent. Located in the popular mountain chain called Serra de Tramuntana (remember it is a UNESCO world heritage site) not far from the capital, is just about 15 kilometres west of Palma. More exactly, Puigpunyent is a small residential town that is situated approximately 25km or 15 miles north west of the capital Palma and the Son Sant Joan International Airport. Is hard to imagine a place of such unusual beauty.

The location is idyllically surrounded by high mountains covered in pine and evergreen oak woodland and olive, almond and carob tree groves as well as tidily cultivated fields where stands majestic country houses which I call it “possessions”. Traditionally these grand estates were the nucleus of the village life. Until the middle of the twentieth century agriculture and cattle raising were the two main occupations of the residents.

The town is still a very tranquil spot where you can wander through the winding narrow lanes. It is believed that the name of the village is originated from the Latin phrase “pondinum pungentem” roughly translated into English as “sharp mountain” which refers to the nearby Puig de Galatzo mountain with its pointed peak some 1035 m above sea level.

Going from its wonderful history to the present, the village of Puigpunyent is not on the popular tourist routes but for those who are looking for an excellent 5 star hotel in this quiet and unspoilt traditional village, will enjoy the Gran Hotel Son Net. This hotel originally a manor house, is perched high above the village and offers delightful views of the community below, the surrounding virgin pine and Holm oak forests and to the west and north the mountain ranges. When it comes to food, the Rose Restaurant is small and unpretentious. It offers to the guests a fabulous choice well-prepared European cuisine in a good atmosphere. The location it has become a firm favourite with many guests of the Gran Hotel Son Net who fancy a change from the hotel’s own superb restaurant. As the main attraction of Puigpunyent, the unrelenting beauty and tranquility offered by the surroundings combined with the close proximity to Palma is making Puigpunyent the ideal destination for those looking to combine a rural escape with easily accessible city life. Also four kilometres away is Galilea, an idyllic village clinging to the mountainside with harmonious panoramic views which I talked about a few days ago. So, if you’re looking for a place to stay while you’re in vacation, then you have to try this place. It’s just perfect!
