Is a beautiful day on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca. The sun beats down on glamorous villas, glorious views, beautiful mountains and the lucidness of the blue sea. This is the time when across the island you will feel detached from the crowded and agitated world. The contrast between lively holiday resorts and traditional Mallorcan mountain villages, between lonely, cristal-clear bays and the characteristic foothills of the Tramuntana mountains make the Southwest region so diverse and full of widespread appeal. Here you’ll find Andratx, a charming old town in south-west of Mallorca with winding cobbled streets, famous street market and fabulous views.

The town is a quaint and traditional Mallorcan place offering a taste of “real” Mallorca, away from the main tourist trail and is about 35km (about 22 miles) from Palma and the airport. Like many coastal towns here, this one is set about 5km (about 3 miles) inland from the port area known as Puerto Andratx. Located in a valley on the southwestern tip of the Tramuntana mountains, this beautiful place is a fairytale for those who are looking for quiet holidays.  Surrounded by orange groves and almond trees, which leave a ‘snowfall’ of blossom each February, Andratx is a sleepy town that only really gets animated on Wednesdays when the streets are taken over by market stalls. The pace is relaxed and the vibe is quite cosmopolitan here – the area is popular with countryside lovers and walkers.

Andratx is perhaps more of a base for explorers than a typical holiday resort. Its quaint, narrow streets and rustic heritage makes it a truly authentic place to visit with a warm welcome for international visitors. It also has some great restaurants, bars and is the home to a large renowned market, held weekly on Wednesdays selling fresh local products. For art lovers, there is a large private art gallery in at Centro Cultural Andratx,  where you can find a large a good collection of contemporary art. This is a superb location to see some of the island’s best art with several exhibition spaces, a good café, tasteful gift shop and impressive grounds behind the building itself. It is an ideal base for cyclists and hikers with many walking trails and challenging cycle routes. There is a golf course close by and a sailing centre at Port d’Andratx.

The nature surrounding Andratx is breath-taking. Many visitors come to this part of Mallorca just to enjoy the mountains, valleys, forest and coastal scenery. If you want to spend a day on the seaside, there are several beaches near Andratx, mainly located around the neighbouring coastal areas of Sant Elm, Port d’Andratx and Camp de Mar. The closest ones in Camp de Mar are only within a 5-minute drive or a 15-minute bus ride away. If you are staying in Andratx it is well worth reading up on the surrounding areas as there is much to see and do within a 30-minute drive. Most notable is Port Andratx, a lively working fishing port with designer shopping and gourmet restaurants. Es Capdellá is a stunning mountain village near to the larger town of Calvia and Camp de Mar – a beach resort with golf and many luxury, sport and relaxation facilities. This is the best time to visit; when you have finished your shopping, climb to the top of the town to see the 13th-century church of Santa Maria. It will be an unforgettable experience.
