Take a taste of real Mallorca in the Alaró resort – a perfect place for visitors seeking a restful holiday away from the main  known tourist attractions. The bustling Alaró is nestled in a peaceful valley on the southern slopes of the Tramuntana Mountain and is a small traditional town , surrounded by countryside and stunning mountain scenery. More precisely the municipal town of Alaro is situated on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Tramuntana Mountain range, approximately 30km (18 miles) on the north west of the capital of Palma and the Son Sant Joan International Airport. Overall, the municipal district covers an area of around 46km2 and the figures taken from the latest Consell de Mallorca census for the island shows a resident population of just 4,869.

The town is favoured for its remote and picturesque charm . Packed with rustic buildings and surrounded of narrow cobbled streets, Alaró has a relaxed pace and its  location makes it a haven for cyclists, ramblers, hikers and casual walkers alike. Romantic and pretty, here is all about the fabulous lush green countryside surroundings and being  located on the slopes of the Tramuntana Mountain range, is a popular base with hikers and cyclists. Many amateur and professional cyclists take advantage of the easy access to some of the island’s best road routes.

The biggest attraction in Alaró is Castell d’Alaro, considered a must see for anyone visiting the area. Castell d’Alaro is perched on top a rocky mountain above the town in the west of Mallorca. A popular walk from the town (or further up the hill if you prefer to drive) takes you to a ruined castle and hilltop chapel offering spectacular views of the Tramuntana mountains, over towards Palma and all the way to the sea. Walking under the shade of the evergreen oaks along an old stone path, one approaches the majestic rock crowning the mountain. In general it takes about two hours from Alaró but once there, you can certainly reward yourself with a well earned glass of sangria at the XVII Century Mare de Deu del Refugi sanctuary and hostelry.

Most of visitors arrive to the castle by foot from the village or by parking at the very traditional Es Verger restaurant. Making a digression from the main discussion point, this restaurant situated between the village of Alaro and Alaro Castle is well known for its lamb dishes. The family who run Lamb Restaurant uses traditional methods to prepare meals for their guests. Even though there is a wide variety of local specialities on the menu such as snails, fish, frito Mallorquin (a delicious fry up of lamb and pig offal with garlic fennel and peppers), the lamb remains the main event, accompanied by the very rustic wine that will certainly warm your heart.

The last part of the road starts in Es Verger or Es Pouet and reaches the gateway of the castle. In this little town there are also more places where you can eat in an ideal ambiance and where you can enjoy spending an evening in the most relaxed way. Around the charming town square of Alaró is where the most of the action occurs thanks to a good selection of traditional bars and restaurants, shops and hotels and also, to the towns church with its beautiful architecture.

Here you’ll find the popular pizza restaurant and ice cream parlour that holds an obvious appeal to younger visitors. Exploring the cobbled alleys of the main square is a good reason to increase your dining options when it comes to food. There is a small market on Saturday mornings where you can buy all kinds of local produce – lovely fresh fruit and vegetables, gifts, handmade jewellery, homewares and clothing. Alaró has several good bakeries selling delicious fresh bread and pastries. If you’re visiting the place this summer, you can catch one of the festivals celebrated by the town. The Saint Roque celebration takes place in the week leading up to the 16th August and is known for the procession of giants that fill the main square. This corner of the island has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and will leave you in no doubt that is the real deal when it comes to the authentic Mallorca. No matter if you are here for the wonderful nature, sports or the amazing food.
