Just 40 minutes drive from the ultra modern and efficient international airport of Palma, Banyalbufar is a small village hidden in the famous Serra de Tramuntana Mountains between Andratx and Pollensa. This old town of Banyalbufar which is bathed in the country side and surrounded by terraces can be found on the northwest coast of Mallorca, an area of incredible natural beauty for a unique holiday destination in a beautiful part of the island. As I mentioned above, the village is set deep within the Sierra Tramuntana Mountains and like many other locations from this island, the area around Banyalbufar is rich in the culture, history and traditions of this part of Spain. For those who love old places, Banyalbufar has a great deal to offer. As well as the beauty of the local area to explore, there are many walking routes around which leads to wonderful places with a amazing past.

The name Banyalbufar is a combination of Moorish and Catalan and means “founded by the sea”. This area was inhabited and cultivated by the Moors in the 10th century who created around 2000 terraces on the mountain slopes and a sophisticated irrigation system of aqueducts which still work today. Also, the area was famous for the cultivation of the highly prized Malvasier or Malvasia grape variety for wine production and the modern vintners in Banyalbufar are now successfully re-establish. It is said that this wine was highly prized by the King of Aragon and was a motivating factor in the re-conquest of Mallorca by Jaume I.

Even if it was traditionally dedicated to animal farming, fishing and agriculture such as production of sundried tomato strings and malvasia wine, today in the process of recovery Banyalbufar has become a tourist town without losing its singular charm having a small but select choice of accommodation: the Hotel Baronia, in the old palace of sa Baronia, the Hotel Sa Coma, the Hotel Mar i Vent, the Hotel Son Borguny, the Hostal Rural Ca’n Busquets and the Hotel Rural Ca Madó Paula. It also has an interesting selection of bars and restaurants, two of them in the Port des Canonge – a small village on the border with Valldemossa. Today Banyalbufar remains a quiet place surrounded by many other charming mountain villages to explore.

A walk to the Port de Canonge is possibly the most beautiful taking you through the shade of pine forests, past incredible rock formations and offering panoramic coastal views. At each end of the week Port de Canonge is converting in a popular fishing port and a walk will give you the opportunity to catch the fishermen coming back with their haul. Like many other places from Mallorca, this village offers many beautiful beaches as well as culture, beauty and fine food which we will talk about in the next article. 🙂
