This is a special place which wraps itself around you and takes you to somewhere that most of us thought only existed in dreams. I’m talking about San Telmo, a place that is appreciated by those who are looking for the genuine Mallorca. Sant Elm (also known as San Telmo in Spanish) is a lovely spot in the far south-west corner of Mallorca.

With the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains behind it and the wonderful crystal clear Mediterranean waters to the front, it has a certain Caribbeanesque feel with a scattering of palm trees and lush countryside. Formerly a small fishing village, just a 45 minute drive from Palma and away from the tourist masses, Sant Telmo is now a laid back resort with a couple of hotels and a great selection of villas and apartment rentals. Being surrounded by an overwhelming mountainous landscape, nowhere on the island will you find sunsets as impressive as they are here.

The major attractions of San Telmo have been provided by the nature itself. Although there are many coastal resorts in Mallorca, this place is peculiarly blessed by the natural protection afforded by the mountains and the marine reserve of Sa Dragonera – also known as Dragonera Island. Here you’ll find also two beaches: a larger sandy beach called ‘San Gran’ and a smaller pebble beach called ‘Sa Petita’ both with good facilities for a very relaxed day on the beach and the blue flag status. Here you have a lot of things to do, like popular mountain hike takes, swimming from the cliffs or enjoying a fantastic restaurant next to the sea. Walking and hiking are popular in this area not just because of the stunning coastal scenery, but because of the natural flora and fauna.

When it comes to the quality of the water, San Telmo is a popular place to swim, snorkel and scuba. Besides diving and hiking, a whole range of activities are offered in and around San Telmo: painting and photography courses, kayaking, sailing, cycling, surfing, horseback riding and golf for example. If you like boats you will find much to admire, from the little wooden fishing boats to elegant up-scale yachts, this is a paradise for sailing enthusiasts.

A boat trip to the nature park of Dragonera Island is a must for anyone interested in wildlife. Sant Elm has several lovely fish restaurants which have great views of the sea and over to Sa Dragonera, being a great place to enjoy seafood with spectacular views and a casual atmosphere.  The most popular part of the place is the festivities of San Telmo that take place at the beginning of August with a marine procession, a Mass in the church and a popular dance. Is also a special moment for the population which both the locals and the outsiders can enjoy. There are also plenty of local festivals and events going on throughout the year in St Telmo and the neighbouring villages. You will never get bored in this place. The best way to find what Mallorca has to offer is to come here and see with your own eyes.
