Mallorca is an island in the Mediterranean Sea that has a superb climate all year round. The coast is made up of gorgeous white sandy beaches, coves with turquoise water and cliffs dotted with leafy pine trees. A bright blue sky covers the idyllic landscape making it easy to connect with the Mediterranean’s energy. Discover the charming villages and paved streets which conserve the essence and traditions of the island. Mallorca is much more than a sun and beach destination; it is a picture-perfect island rich in culture that invites one to explore every single square inch. If you want to travel in this dreamy place, here you have 5 varied and interesting facts about Mallorca that will help you get to know the island a little bit better. Starting with the beautiful history of this corner of heaven, the first thing (1) you’ll have to know is that the name of the island comes from an old Latin phrase ‘insula maior’ that means ‘larger island’ as Mallorca is the largest island in all of Spain. Gradually the phrase was mispronounced and with time the island became known as Mallorca. Also when it comes to history and culture the second (2) important thing that you’ll have to know is that the island has been inhabited by humans since 7000 BC. Due to its significant geographic location in the middle of the Mediterranean, many armies have attempted to invade it. In 123 BC the Romans claimed the island. The most famous invasion was that of King Jaime of Aragon in 1229 which was the start of the creation of Mallorca as everybody know it today. Getting to number 3, tourism has been present on the island for many years playing host in the 1920s to the glamourous likes of Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. More mass tourism took hold on the island from the 1950s. At number four (4) I will move on to a more sensitive subject such as artists and writers that have been attracted to the dramatic and picturesque west coast of the island for many decades. Robert Graves known as one of England’s greatest poets was one of the first Englishman who moved to the island. He resided (& was buried) in the pretty mountain village of Deia which has since become a hub for the creative crowd and celebrities. In the end being the 5th topic of this article you’ll have to know that Mallorca is home to millions of visitors each year. For instance there were more than 27,832,865 visitors to the island through the Son Sant Joan Airport at Palma in 2016. In the same year, over 1.5 million visitors has visited the island by sea. So if others know why they come, you can find out your own reasons to come too! Everything about this place is magic and all those who visited the island did fell in love irremediably.
