How can you have an unforgettable vacation? Simple! There is a place in Mallorca near the Tramuntana Mountains that is the perfect spot for relaxing time.  This place has been crucial in their island’s history being the hall to the most important pilgrimage center in Mallorca; it has provided coal, ice, wood and olive oil for many villages (the city of Palma included) for centuries. Its inhabitants have protected Mallorca’s northwest rocky coast from pirate attacks for 400 years; its people got through the terrible scourge of banditry for almost 200 years. Nowadays, this spot is a redoubt of peace and calmness that holds five beautiful villages with their own heritage and history. I’m talking of course about the municipality of Selva. How I said earlier, is a municipality located 32 km from Palma in the district of Raiger. It is bounded by Inca and it consists five population centres: Selva, Caimari, Moscari, Binibona and Biniamar  counting a population of 3500 inhabitants, a surface of over 2000 ha and it was also qualified as a Natural Area of Special Interest.

This region keeps its country landscape intact. Much of the historic architecture and interiors have been maintained giving this home a sense of grandeur and strong Mallorquian culture. From all five population centres, Selva is the main one, since is where the Town Hall is situated. Is also important to highlight the Gothic church from the 13th century, an impressive structure located in Placa Major dedicated to the village’s patron saint – Saint Lawence. According to the folk belief, the highest part of it is at the same level with Lluc’s square and there are forty-two steps that lead up to the more recent gothic facade.

Large parts of the church were renovated after it was ravaged by fire in 1855. To maintain its authenticity, the engineer in charge worked to the original plans from the 17th century. Another main atraction is the Valella cross, also known as the town’s historical architecture. The baroque cross dates back to 1710 and it was officially declared with cultural significance in 1963. You can still see the eight figures carved into niches around its base. However, whilst failing to conform to the densely populated, neon lighted regions to the south of the island, this small town offers an abundance of local character.

Being a pretty and small town, you will love the landscape up by the hill. Here you will find two Tapas bars (Cas Misser on the square) plus the restaurants of Es Parc (great views, good steaks) and a new restaurant, Miceli with local market food which has a lovely ambience. Just because is a small village, it doesn’t limit your dining choices and the best known is definitely Miceli’s. The small restaurant provides great views of the surrounding town and beyond. In addition you’ve also got a leather factory (Kollflex) and a local products/gift shop. On the main road you’ll find also the restaurant of Cas Teuler. Undoubtedly one of the best ways to enjoy Selva is simply to take a stroll and soak up the atmosphere. Selva enjoys a number of unique attractions, many of them being found in local fiestas. These celebrations offers to the visitor a unique insight into local customs while more attractions that occurs with greater frequency, are to be found within the pleasantries of the nearby surrounding countryside. If a holiday that guarantees relaxation amongst the seclusion of Mallorca’s rugged interior sounds appealing, then Selva may have exactly what you need for an unforgettable experience.
